Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: Building More Inclusive Communities

Every March, communities across the country observe Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM)—a time to recognize the contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and to continue building communities where everyone belongs.

Originally established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, DDAM encourages greater awareness, inclusion, and access to opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.

At InReach, we believe awareness is only the first step. True inclusion happens when individuals and families can easily connect with trusted resources and supportive communities. InReach is there to help accomplish this for individuals supported in our many programs and services – from healthy living and education to recreation and advocacy!

This month is a reminder that inclusive communities are built when we prioritize accessibility, opportunity, and respect for all.

By learning more, supporting inclusive organizations, and advocating for accessibility, each of us can help create a world where everyone has the chance to participate and succeed! Join InReach to make this happen for more individuals in North Carolina!
